Here's a straightforward rundown of what you'll need, how it works, and what to expect, along with the other bits that are good to know about the eVisa.

Getting ready for an Azerbaijan e-visa is mostly about having the right details to hand before you start. None of it is complicated, but a couple of the requirements can confuse people, so it's worth a quick read first.

What is required for an Azerbaijan visa?

During an eVisa application, you will be asked for a few personal details and a passport scan. Here is what is usually needed.

  • Passport
A valid passport is needed. It should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival, and for at least 3 months after the eVisa expires. Every passport in a travel group needs to meet these requirements.
  • Email Address
An email address is where application updates and the electronic visas are sent. It is worth double-checking, as it cannot be changed afterwards.
  • Travel Dates
Arrival and departure dates are needed too. It helps to have flights and transport confirmed, make sure they are not outside the visa validity period.
  • Accommodation Details
The name and address of where you are staying in Azerbaijan, such as a hotel booking or a host's address.

With those ready, the rest is straightforward and entirely online, with no embassy visit and nothing to post. Here is what is usually involved.

How does the Azerbaijan E-Visa work?

  1. 1
    Requested online
The eVisa application is completed online, rather than at an embassy or on arrival.
  2. 2
    Personal details
It asks for the traveller's name, date of birth, email address, travel dates, and where they will be staying in Azerbaijan.
  3. 3
    Documentation
Upload a clear image of your passport. Colour or black and white scans are both accepted.
  4. 4
    Groups and families
Couples, families, and groups can be covered on a single application.
  5. 5
    Details checked
Information should be checked for accuracy beforehand, as it cannot be changed once an application is finalised.
  6. 6
    Decision by email
The outcome is sent to the email address provided, usually within the timeframe you chose.

Once it goes through, the eVisa itself is simple. It's a single electronic document linked to your passport, and the details below show exactly what it allows and how long it lasts.

Most visitors travel on the standard tourist e-visa, but the right type depends on why you're going. Here are the usual reasons people visit Azerbaijan.

The most common reasons for visiting include:

Tourism
Business
Cultural events
Education
Sporting events
Scientific research
Humanitarian work
Medical treatment
Personal & official trips

Timing is the part most travellers ask about, so it's worth planning around. How long it takes depends on the speed you choose and on how far ahead of your trip you apply.

Timing & Notification

It is best to apply at least 3 business days before the arrival date. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are not counted as business days, and local or foreign holidays can affect timing too. Updates and the final decision are sent by email, so it is worth checking, including the spam folder.

Once it's issued, the visa runs on a fixed clock whether you use it or not. It helps to know how long you have, and what to do if your plans need more time than the visa allows.

Validity & Extensions

An approved Azerbaijan e-visa is valid for 90 days (3 months), covering tourist, student, and business visas. If you need to stay longer, a separate “extension of temporary stay” is handled directly by the relevant Azerbaijani migration office, and the request must be made at least 3 days before your visa expires. Extensions are only granted in limited circumstances: urgent medical treatment, illness or death, unfinished business, or emergencies. If approved, you may receive up to 60 additional days.

The vast majority of applications are approved, but it's worth knowing what happens in the rare case one isn't, and what your options are from there.

Visa Denial & Reapplication

If it is not approved, you will receive an email shortly after the outcome is reached. The notice may not include a specific reason. Common practical causes are passport photo quality issues, incomplete or inaccurate personal details, payment problems, or ineligibility under the current eligibility list.

There is no formal appeal process. The two practical options are to start again with corrected details, or to use the regular tourist visa route through an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate. If you need help deciding the next step, you can contact us and we will try to help.

Before any of that, the first thing to confirm is whether your nationality can use the eVisa at all. More than 90 countries can, including most of the common ones.

With the visa side sorted, a few local rules are worth a glance before you travel, so nothing catches you out at the border or once you're in the country.

Important Regulations

When visiting Azerbaijan, be mindful of local laws and customs:

  • Do not photograph military buildings, personnel, or equipment.
  • Do not purchase artefacts or antiques without the proper permits.
  • Respect local religion, dress codes, food customs, and traditions.
  • Business travellers should confirm they have the appropriate permits before exporting goods such as artefacts, artwork, caviar, carpets, or religious items.
