Baku is the kind of capital where a single day can move from medieval stone walls to futuristic architecture, then end with a walk beside the Caspian Sea. For first-time visitors, the challenge is not finding something to do. It is choosing what deserves space in the itinerary.

1. Walk through Icherisheher, Baku’s Old City

Start with Icherisheher, the walled Old City. Its narrow lanes, stone courtyards, small cafés, and historic buildings give visitors the clearest sense of old Baku. The Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs are the main landmarks, but the best experience is slower: walk without rushing, notice the carved balconies, and stop for tea when the streets become busy.

2. See the Flame Towers from Highland Park

The Flame Towers are one of Baku’s most recognizable modern symbols. For the best view, go to Highland Park, especially near sunset. From there, you can see the towers, the bay, the boulevard, and the city’s mix of old and new architecture in one frame.

3. Visit the Heydar Aliyev Center

The Heydar Aliyev Center is worth visiting even if you only see it from the outside. Its flowing white form, designed by Zaha Hadid, is one of the most photographed buildings in the region. If you have time, go inside for exhibitions and cultural displays.

4. Spend time on Baku Boulevard

Baku Boulevard runs along the Caspian waterfront and works for almost every type of traveler. Families come for open space, couples walk in the evening, and photographers use the promenade for wide views of the bay. It is also close to several attractions, including the Carpet Museum and shopping areas.

5. Explore the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

The Carpet Museum helps visitors understand why carpets are more than decoration in Azerbaijani culture. The building itself is shaped like a rolled carpet, and the collections show regional patterns, colors, weaving traditions, and the role of carpets in daily life.

6. Take a half-day trip to Gobustan

Gobustan is one of the most popular day trips from Baku. The area is known for ancient rock engravings and the unusual mud volcano landscapes nearby. It adds a completely different texture to a Baku itinerary: less polished, more geological, and much older than the city skyline.

7. Visit Ateshgah and Yanar Dag

Azerbaijan is often called the Land of Fire, and the Absheron Peninsula explains why. Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag are commonly paired in a half-day route. These sites connect natural gas phenomena with local history, religion, and the country’s identity.

8. Try Azerbaijani food in a traditional restaurant

Leave time for a proper meal, not just a quick snack. Try plov, dolma, qutab, dushbara, piti, fresh herbs, local cheeses, and tea with sweets. Baku has polished restaurants, but smaller traditional places often give a warmer introduction to the cuisine.

9. Visit Yashil Bazaar

Yashil Bazaar is a good place to see the everyday side of Baku: spices, dried fruit, tea, nuts, pickles, herbs, and seasonal produce. Go with curiosity rather than a strict shopping list. It is also a useful stop if you want edible souvenirs.

10. Watch the city change at night

Baku looks different after dark. The Flame Towers light up, the boulevard becomes more active, and the Old City feels quieter. Even if your schedule is short, keep one evening free for a walk rather than filling every hour with attractions.

How many days do you need in Baku?

Two days is enough for the Old City, Boulevard, Highland Park, and one or two museums. Three days gives you time for Gobustan or Absheron. Four or more days lets you add slower food experiences and a regional trip outside the capital.

Visa planning tip

Before booking tours, confirm whether you need an Azerbaijan eVisa and whether your passport meets the required validity rules. Small errors in travel dates or passport numbers can create avoidable stress close to departure.
